Zagora, also known as the Moroccan Sahara Desert Gate, is located in South-Eastern Morocco at the foot of the Anti-Atlas Mountains and on the coast of the Draa Valley. The vast Draa Valley, which is still home to many Berber tribes, is largely responsible for Zagor’s allure. Zagora refers to the mountain that overlooks the city from the shore of the Draa Valley. Draa was the town’s ancient name. The town was not renamed Zagoro until the twentieth century, however, some Bedouins nearby still refer to it as Draa in their everyday talks. When traveling from the sub-Saharan areas, trade caravans traveled via Zagora and the Draa Valley on their way to their final destination, Marrakech.
