The Merzouga desert is without a question the best place in Morocco to go on a journey in the desert. You can go on some of the world’s best camel rides, glamping, and desert trips. You can also drive a buggy or a bike through the hills.
Merzouga is in the very southeast of Morocco, only 50 kilometers away from Algeria. Merzouga has the world’s biggest and tallest golden dunes. The dunes cover about 30 kilometers and the tallest point is said to be about 150 meters high. But if you go further into the Southeast, you’ll find that other lands might also be a good choice.
Because the Erg Chebbi desert goes through this area, you may have heard of Hassi Labied, Tanamoust, Khamlia, or other small towns called Merzouga. There is, however, a main small city with about 5,000 people living in it. Tourists from other countries and Moroccans looking for sand baths both like to visit the desert. The most common illness among them is rheumatism, and hot sand is the best way to treat it.
People love to ride camels and sleep in tents in the hills at Merzouga. There are, however, other things to do, like the desert tour, which lets you go on an adventure trip to the areas around the dunes. You can see the Gnawa tribe, the Berber Nomads, and a lot of other groups. You can also take a bike or a buggy and go watch the sun rise or set.
